It's Tracking Your Every Move and You May Not Even Know
A favorite pastime of Internet users is to share their location: services like Google Latitude can inform friends when you are nearby; another, Foursquare, has turned reporting these updates into a game. But as a German Green party politician, Malte Spitz, recently learned, we are already continually being tracked whether we volunteer to be or not. Cellphone companies do not typically divulge how much information they collect, so Mr. Spitz went to court to find out exactly what his cellphone company, Deutsche Telekom, knew about his whereabouts. more...
The Tracking Device We've All Embraced: Our Phones
I thought it was safe to say that everyone knows by now that one thing their smartphones are smart about is their location. But the New York Times doesn`t agree. A piece this weekend on what our GPS-enabled smartphones know about us was headlined, "It's Tracking Your Every Move and You May Not Even Know". more...

Vanishing In a Digital Age: Lessons From Evan Ratliff
Like many privacy-minded individuals, I got a kick out of Wired Magazine editor Evan Ratliff's experiment to Vanish for 30 days. Even though it was a contest and there were many things that he did intentionally to leave some kind of a trail behind, much like what happens to many people who try to vanish, what he did that worked and what he did that didn't work are very illuminating to those who really want to vanish without leaving a trace. Evan was unfortunately caught a few days shy of his 30 day-goal. Even more unfortunate is the idea that has perpetuated since the contest, one that many people have mentioned to me since the contest was over, that you simply cannot vanish and maintain a presence on the internet. This is not entirely true. I have addressed in previous articles almost every tool and technique that would have helped a person avoid the actual mistakes Evan made and which would have kept Evan from being discovered for the entire 30 days or even for 30 years. Many more of those tools and techniques are available in the book How to Vanish, Legally Protecting Personal and Financial Privacy to create a complete strategy for personal privacy. Here are the things that can be learned from the Vanish contest to make a vanishing act last longer than 30 days. more...

How to Secure Your Public Airport WiFi
Most individuals who conduct business on-the-go may eventually find themselves using the Wi-Fi services in an airport hot spot. Even those who are not conducting business may find themselves contacting family and friends while on their way for a long distance visit. Using a laptop can be an excellent way to keep the communication lines open in locations where one's cell phone has no service available. One major concern, however, is public access security. This is why a lot of airport hot spot users are looking to run secure airport VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections. When you use an airport VPN connection, your laptop will connect securely over the Internet in a manner that will eliminate the potential for hackers to access your personal information. more...
How to Secure Your Public Hotel WiFi
For those who find themselves traveling quite a bit, this may involve extended stays at various hotels. While most hotels these days offer advanced features, such as available Wi-Fi connections, one thing that they cannot offer is guaranteed Internet connection security. This is why many businesses, which have employees that travel, make sure to have laptops that can utilize hotel VPN hotspot protection. In this way a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection can be established in order to ensure a safe connection. more...
